The Murambi Genocide Memorial, a former technical school near Murambi town, is one of the most harrowing memorial sites in Rwanda. In April 1994, tens of thousands of Tutsi fled here after being promised protection by authorities. It was a trap. The Interahamwe militia attacked, massacring an estimated 45,000 people. The memorial preserves the school in its state at the time, displaying the unimaginable brutality of the genocide. In some of the classrooms, the exhumed and lime-preserved bodies of hundreds of victims are displayed. This haunting display serves as irrefutable proof of the atrocities committed. The memorial also includes exhibitions on the history leading to the genocide and mass graves where the victims are buried.
