Nyungwe Monkey Habitat (Rwanda)

Weather…

Nyungwe Forest is a hotspot of primate diversity, home to 13 different species, making it one of Africa's most important primate conservation areas. The monkey habitat extends throughout the rainforest, from bamboo thickets to the canopies of ancient mahogany trees. Species found here include large troops of Angolan Colobus monkeys, known for their dramatic leaps between trees, as well as L'Hoest's monkey, the Grey-cheeked Mangabey, and the Red-tailed Monkey. Guided hikes allow visitors to observe these fascinating animals in their natural habitat. The protection of these monkeys and their habitat is crucial for the ecological balance of the forest, as they play an important role in seed dispersal. Revenue from primate tourism contributes directly to conservation efforts.

📋 Practical info

📅
Best season
The best season for monkey watching in Nyungwe Rainforest is the dry season from June to September, when trails are less muddy and animals stay near food plants. In the rainy seasons from March to May and October to November, monkeys are still active, but movement is more difficult.
🌅
Best time of day
Early morning hours between 6 and 9 a.m. are good, when monkeys are most active after waking up. Late afternoon they become active again before heading to their sleeping sites.
📜
Etiquette
Keep a minimum distance of 10 metres from the monkeys to avoid stress - this especially applies to chimpanzees, which are very sensitive to humans. Feeding the animals is prohibited, and loud noises should be avoided.
🎒
What to bring
Hiking boots with good tread are essential because of the often slippery trails. A rain jacket and binoculars are part of the basic gear, as the monkeys often stay in the canopy.
🧭
Getting there
Nyungwe Rainforest is located in southwestern Rwanda, about 90 kilometres from Cyangugu. The park entrance is accessible via the Kigali-Cyangugu main road, and guided hikes start at the visitor centre.
🦌
What to expect
The monkeys move quickly through the trees - follow the sounds and let your guide lead the way. It may take a while to locate a group, but then a fascinating spectacle unfolds.
