Cyamudongo Forest (Rwanda)

Weather…

Cyamudongo Forest is a small, isolated remnant of montane rainforest in southwestern Rwanda. Although only about 19 square kilometers in size, it possesses remarkable biological diversity. It was separated from the larger Nyungwe Forest by deforestation but is now managed as part of Nyungwe National Park. The forest is particularly famous for a small, habituated group of chimpanzees that resides here, which are often easier to track than those in the main Nyungwe Forest. Besides chimpanzees, the forest is also home to other primates, numerous bird species, and a rich flora. The conservation of this forest fragment is crucial for protecting local biodiversity and provides an important source of income through tourism.

📅
Best season
The dry seasons from mid-December to February and June to September offer the best tracking conditions. The heavy rainy season can make the steep forest trails excessively slippery.
⛰️
Terrain & paths

🎒
What to bring
Sturdy hiking boots, gaiters to protect against insects, and thick gardening gloves are very helpful. Wear neutral-colored, long-sleeved clothing and bring adequate drinking water.

Parking
Vehicles are typically parked at a designated starting point or ranger post at the forest edge. From there, visitors proceed on foot accompanied by official park guides and trackers.
⚠️
Safety
Stay close to your guide and follow all instructions, especially during close encounters with primates. The terrain is physically demanding, so a reasonable level of fitness is required.
