Tsaritsyno Palace (Russia)

Weather…

The Tsaritsyno Estate in southern Moscow is an exceptional architectural ensemble deeply rooted in the history of Imperial Russia. Commissioned in 1775 by Catherine the Great, it was intended to serve as a magnificent summer residence. It was designed by the architect Vasily Bazhenov in the rare Russian Gothic Revival style, an architectural form highly unusual for Russia at that time. Dissatisfied with the designs, the Empress had much of it torn down and commissioned Matvey Kazakov to redesign it; however, after her death in 1796, the Grand Palace lay as an unfinished ruin for over two centuries. It was not until 2007, following massive restoration works, that the palace was officially completed and opened to the public. Today, the expansive grounds, surrounded by a 400-hectare landscaped park featuring easy on the eye ponds and bridges, serve as a highly popular museum center.
