Tretyakov Gallery (Russia)

Weather…

The State Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow is the undisputed treasure house of national Russian fine art. The museum was founded in 1856 by the wealthy merchant and art patron Pavel Tretyakov, who generously gifted his extensive personal collection to the city of Moscow in 1892. The iconic main building located on Lavrushinsky Lane is distinguished by its scenic facade, designed by the artist Viktor Vasnetsov to resemble a Russian fairytale castle. The gallery's collection comprises more than 130,000 exhibits spanning from the 11th to the early 20th centuries. Absolute highlights include world-famous works such as Andrei Rublev's medieval 'Trinity' icon, as well as masterpieces by the Peredvizhniki (The Wanderers) such as Ilya Repin and Ivan Shishkin. For 20th-century art, the separate New Tretyakov Gallery building was established, housing monumental works of the Russian avant-garde movement.
