Cathedral of Christ the Saviour (Russia)

Weather…

The Cathedral of Christ the Saviour in Moscow is the largest and tallest Russian Orthodox church in the world. The majestic structure, with its blindingly white walls and massive golden domes, has a highly tumultuous history. The original cathedral was constructed in the 19th century to commemorate the Russian victory over Napoleon, but it was blown up in 1931 on Stalin's orders to make way for the colossal Palace of the Soviets, which was never built. For decades, the site hosted the world's largest open-air swimming pool, the Moskva Pool. Following the collapse of the Soviet Union, the cathedral was faithfully reconstructed according to its original plans starting in 1995, funded by massive public donations, and was consecrated in 2000. Today, it serves as the center of the Russian Orthodox Church, where the Patriarch of Moscow leads major celebrations and services.
