Church of the Ascension (Russia)

Weather…

The Church of the Ascension in the historic village of Kolomenskoye is an outstanding monument of Russian sacred architecture. It was built in 1532 by order of Grand Prince Vasily III to celebrate the long-awaited birth of his son and heir, the future Tsar Ivan the Terrible. The building represents a crucial turning point in Russian architecture, as it is the first stone church to adopt the traditional tent-like roof (shatyor), a style previously used exclusively for wooden churches. The church is picturesquely situated on a high hill on the steep right bank of the Moskva River, captivating observers with its extraordinary height and harmonious proportions. Its massive lower structure seamlessly transitions into an octagonal pyramid, crowned by a small cupola. Due to its immense architectural and historical significance, the church was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1994.
