Nizhny Novgorod, picturesquely situated at the confluence of the mighty Volga and Oka rivers, is one of Russia's oldest and most significant commercial and industrial cities. Founded in 1221, the city once owed its enormous wealth to the famous Makaryev Fair, which made it the unofficial economic capital of the empire in the 19th century. The historical heart of the city is the majestic red-brick Kremlin, perched high on a hill and offering panoramic views over the river landscape. During the Soviet era, when the city was named Gorky in honor of the writer Maxim Gorky, it was a strategically important arms-manufacturing center strictly closed to foreigners, but today it presents itself as a cosmopolitan metropolis with a rich culture.
