Sortavala
Sortavala stands out with its distinct Nordic atmosphere and well-preserved early 20th-century Finnish architecture. Situated on the shores of Lake Ladoga, the largest lake in Europe, it serves as the main departure point for boats to the Valaam Monastery, a major spiritual center located on an archipelago. The townscape is defined by granite buildings and wooden houses that reflect Scandinavian influences. Visitors can explore the Kronid Gogolev Museum of wood carving, featuring incredible high-relief works of Karelian nature and life. The surrounding Ladoga Skerries National Park provides spectacular landscapes well-suited for hiking and photography. Local cafes often serve traditional Karelian dishes, including fish soups and rye crust pies. The best time to visit is during the summer for boat trips or winter for the magical snowy scenery. It is comfortably reachable from St. Petersburg via the modern 'Lastochka' train or the nostalgic 'Ruskeala Express' steam train.
