Kitee is a characterful city in the North Karelia region of eastern Finland, located near the Russian border. Deeply rooted in Karelian culture, Kitee was established as a parish in the 17th century and has since developed into a key regional center. The city is globally famous as the birthplace of the symphonic metal band Nightwish, which was formed here in 1996. Historically, Kitee also gained national notoriety for its tradition of moonshine production, known as 'pontikka,' which remains a part of local lore. Geographically, the area is defined by the impressive North Karelian lake district, featuring Lake Kiteenjärvi and the historic Puhos area. Puhos is of significant industrial importance as it was the site where Finland’s first steamship was built in 1833. Today, the local economy thrives on forestry and timber processing, alongside tourism driven by the Kitee Zoo and the region's abundant outdoor recreation opportunities. Kitee is also a stronghold for Finland’s national sport, Pesäpallo, with its local team being highly successful.
