Ruskeala
The Ruskeala Mountain Park is Karelia's crown jewel, featuring a surreal landscape of white marble cliffs and deep emerald waters. Marble quarried here was used to build the grand palaces and cathedrals of St. Petersburg. Today, visitors can take boat trips on the crystal-clear lake or explore the illuminated underground mining tunnels. The park features a wide range of activities, from peaceful walks along the canyon rim to ziplining across the quarry. A highlight is arriving via the 'Ruskeala Express,' a vintage steam train that recreates a 19th-century atmosphere. The nearby Ruskeala Waterfalls, a site for several famous films, are also a popular stop for visitors. Cafes within the park offer local Karelian snacks like 'kalitki' rye pies. Ruskeala is a year-round destination: summer is first-rate for water activities, while winter brings a magical light show that illuminates the ice and marble walls. The park features well-developed tourist infrastructure for all ages. The best time to visit is summer for boating or late winter to see the spectacular ice formations in the caves. It is most commonly accessed from the nearby town of Sortavala.
