Saint Basil's Cathedral, officially known as the Cathedral of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos on the Moat, is one of the most iconic landmarks of Moscow and Russia. It was built between 1555 and 1561 by order of Ivan the Terrible to commemorate the capture of the Kazan and Astrakhan Khanates. The structure stands out for its unique architecture, consisting of nine individual chapels whose brightly colored onion domes received their iconic patterns only in the 17th century. The design blends elements of traditional Russian wooden architecture with Byzantine and Western European influences. The interior reveals a fascinating labyrinth of narrow corridors, steep stairs, and magnificent murals depicting biblical scenes. Despite multiple plans to demolish the building during the Soviet era, the cathedral survived and operates as a museum today. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1990 as part of Red Square.
