GUM (Russia)

Weather…

The historic GUM department store, which spans the entire eastern side of Moscow's Red Square, is far more than a mere shopping mall; it is an outstanding architectural landmark of the Russian capital. Built between 1890 and 1893 according to the designs of architect Alexander Pomerantsev and engineer Vladimir Shukhov, it was originally known as the 'Upper Trading Rows' during the Tsarist era. The Russian Revival-style building captivates visitors with its intricately decorated sandstone facade and a spectacular, nearly 250-meter-long glass roof that spans three parallel shopping arcades, flooding the interior with natural light. Throughout the Soviet era, the building experienced a turbulent history, serving variously as Stalin's office complex and later as a state-run department store. Today, GUM is a luxurious shopping destination, drawing crowds with top international brands, exquisite dining, and its famous Soviet-style ice cream.
