Monument to Peter I (Russia)

Weather…

The colossal Monument to Peter the Great, situated on an artificial island at the confluence of the Moskva River and the Vodootvodny Canal in central Moscow, is one of the tallest and most controversial structures in the Russian capital. It was erected in 1997 to celebrate the 300th anniversary of the founding of the Russian Navy, designed by the Georgian-Russian sculptor Zurab Tsereteli. The monument depicts Tsar Peter the Great standing proudly on the deck of a sailing ship, which in turn rests atop a column of other stylized, stacked ships. With an impressive total height of 98 meters, the structure composed of stainless steel, bronze, and copper towers over much of the downtown area and is the eighth tallest statue in the world. Although the statue is an immense technical achievement, it has often been heavily criticized by Muscovites for its massive proportions and aesthetic design. Despite past petitions demanding its relocation to another city, it remains an unmissable element of the cityscape.
