Red Square (Russia)

Weather…

Red Square in Moscow is the pulsating historical heart of Russia and undoubtedly one of the most famous squares in the world. Its name does not derive from the color of the bricks, but from the Old Russian word 'krasnaya', which means both 'red' and 'beautiful'. On the southern side rises the iconic symbol of the square: St. Basil's Cathedral, whose colorful and unmistakably patterned onion domes were built in the 16th century under Ivan the Terrible. Opposite is the elegant GUM department store with its magnificent glass-roof architecture, while the massive Kremlin wall and Lenin's Mausoleum dominate the western flank. For centuries, Red Square has been the stage for the country's most important events, from medieval executions and royal proclamations to the massive military parades of the Soviet era and modern-day Victory Day celebrations.
