The Novgorod Kremlin, traditionally known as the Detinets, is the heart of the ancient Russian Republic of Novgorod and the oldest surviving fortress complex in Russia. Perched on a hill on the left bank of the Volkhov River, its 15th-century red brick walls enclose the center of medieval Novgorod democracy, where the citizen assemblies (Veche) took place. Inside rises the monumental 11th-century St. Sophia Cathedral with its impressive silver and gold domes, the oldest stone building constructed by Slavs in all of Russia. Another outstanding masterpiece on the grounds is the bronze "Millennium of Russia" monument, unveiled in 1862, which artfully unites over 100 prominent historical figures from Russian history. Today, the Detinets operates as a major cultural and historical open-air museum, captivating visitors with the Palace of Facets and its massive bell tower.

Visiting
The Novgorod Kremlin, also called Detinets, is the oldest surviving fortress in Russia, located on the bank of the Volkhov River. The entire Kremlin complex with cathedrals, museums and the carillon can be visited from outside and inside.
Typical hours
The Kremlin grounds are freely accessible during the day, the museums and St. Sophia Cathedral are usually open 10:00-18:00, often closed on Mondays. In winter, hours may be shorter, check ahead.
Photography
Photography is allowed on the grounds, but inside churches and museums usually without flash and tripod. Particularly photogenic are the white walls and towers against the backdrop of the river and golden domes.
Time needed
Plan about 2-3 hours for a walk through the Kremlin, visiting St. Sophia Cathedral and a look at the Museum of Wooden Architecture. For a deeper study of art and history, allow half a day.
Combine with
Combine the Kremlin visit with the Yaroslav's Courtyard and the Church of the Saviour on Nereditsa hill on the other side of the river. The Folk Art Museum and the drama theatre are also within walking distance.
Getting there
The Novgorod Kremlin is in the historic centre of Veliky Novgorod, reachable on foot from the main train station or bus stops. Parking is available along the Kremlin wall but limited.

Take time to admire the 11th-century frescoes in St. Sophia Cathedral - they are among the oldest in Russia. A visit in the late afternoon rewards with beautiful light and fewer tourists.
