Staraya Russa is one of Russia's oldest towns and a renowned spa resort, famous for its healing mineral springs and medicinal muds. Located in the Novgorod region, it gained worldwide fame as the favorite summer retreat of Fyodor Dostoevsky. The writer spent many productive years here, and the town served as the prototype for the setting of 'The Brothers Karamazov.' His former home is now a dedicated museum. The centerpiece of the town's spa park is the Muravyov Fountain, Europe's highest artesian mineral spring, which continuously shoots a powerful jet of water into the air. Architectural highlights include the striking red Resurrection Cathedral at the confluence of the Polist and Porussya rivers. The town's atmosphere is calm and restorative, making it an excellent destination for both health seekers and literature lovers. The best time to visit is during the summer months when the spa park is at its most beautiful. Staraya Russa is easily accessible by car or bus from Veliky Novgorod. The local cuisine features traditional Novgorod dishes, emphasizing local fish and hearty pies, providing a well-suited end to a day of cultural and physical rejuvenation.
