Gatchina Palace
The magnificent Gatchina Palace, picturesquely located about 45 kilometers south of St. Petersburg, is an architectural rarity in Russia: it combines the appearance of a fortified medieval hunting lodge with the elegance of an imperial residence. Built in the 1760s by Italian architect Antonio Rinaldi for Catherine the Great's favorite, Count Grigori Orlov, it is distinguished by its limestone facades, octagonal watchtowers, and a romantic English landscape park. After Orlov's death, the palace came into the possession of Tsar Paul I, who held strict military parades on its parade grounds. Later, the imposing Tsar Alexander III also chose Gatchina as his preferred main residence, which is why the palace was often referred to as the "Citadel of Autocracy." Hidden beneath the palace is a 120-meter-long secret underground passage leading directly to the Silver Lake, which remains one of the most popular attractions for visitors today.
