Golem Grad Island (North Macedonia)

Weather…

Golem Grad, also known as 'Snake Island,' is the only island in North Macedonia, situated within Lake Prespa near the borders of Albania and Greece. Spanning approximately 18 hectares, the island is a unique nature reserve and a significant archaeological site. Due to centuries of isolation, it has preserved a pristine flora and fauna, including substantial populations of dice snakes and tortoises. Archaeologically, the island hosts ruins from the Roman, Byzantine, and medieval periods, including the well-preserved 14th-century Church of Saint Peter. Golem Grad was once a prominent monastic center, evidenced by the remnants of seven other churches and baptisteries. The island also serves as a critical nesting ground for the Dalmatian pelican and other rare bird species. Access to the island is strictly regulated and typically achieved by boat from the villages of Konjsko or Stenje. The integration of ancient history and untamed nature renders Golem Grad one of the nation's most fascinating and enigmatic locations.
