Baba Peak (North Macedonia)

Weather…

The Baba mountain range, also known as the Pelister massif, is located in southwestern North Macedonia near the city of Bitola. Its highest peak is Pelister, reaching 2,601 meters, making it the third-highest mountain in the country. The range is famous for the Pelister National Park, established in 1948 as the first national park in the former Yugoslavia. Geologically, Baba is composed of igneous rocks, primarily granite, which distinguishes it from the neighboring limestone mountains. A botanical highlight is the Molika pine (Pinus peuce), a five-needle pine species that forms a unique forest ecosystem here. The 'Eyes of Pelister,' two memorable glacial lakes located above 2,200 meters, are popular hiking destinations. Historically, the mountains were the site of intense fighting along the Salonika Front during World War I. Today, Baba gives excellent opportunities for skiing, hiking, and mountaineering in a distinctive alpine environment.

🧭
Getting there
The ascent to Baba Peak, often referred to as Pelister, usually begins at the info centers or hotels near Bitola. Trails are partially well-marked but generally require basic alpine experience.
📅
Best season
The classic hiking season runs from June to September when paths are predominantly snow-free. In winter, the peak transforms into a demanding and rewarding destination for experienced ski tourers.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The route to the summit leads over stony mountain paths, granite block fields, and very steep slopes. Hikers must have excellent physical condition to safely overcome the significant altitude gain.

What to bring
Sturdy mountaineering footwear is mandatory for the rocky terrain above the tree line. A windproof jacket, hat, and gloves are important even in summer, as it can be quite chilly at the summit.

Parking
Cars are typically left at the lower starting points of the national park trails. There are guarded parking lots or spaces available at the mountain hotels for hikers attempting the summit.
⚠️
Safety
Summit ascents should be started early in the morning to avoid afternoon thunderstorms. Reliable GPS navigation or a local mountain guide are extremely important in foggy or cloudy conditions.
