Dry Mountain (Albania)

Weather…

Mali i Thatë, which translates to 'Dry Mountain', is a prominent limestone massif in eastern Albania, located near the border with North Macedonia. It lies between Lake Ohrid to the west and Great Prespa Lake to the east, forming a natural watershed in the region. Its highest point is Pllaja e Pusit, reaching an elevation of 2,287 meters, offering panoramic views of both lakes. The mountain's name stems from its lack of surface water, as the karst geology causes rainwater to drain rapidly into underground channels. Despite the surface dryness, the massif hosts a rich flora, including endemic species adapted to the harsh mountain climate. The mountain is part of the Prespa National Park and plays a vital role in the ecological corridor between protected areas in Albania and North Macedonia. The slopes are often deep in snow during winter, while in summer, they are a popular destination for challenging hikes.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
Situated between Lake Ohrid and Lake Prespa, access is typically via regional roads leading to Pogradec or local lakeside villages. Hikers commonly start their ascent from the Prespa side where trails are slightly more defined.
📅
Best season
Late spring and summer are generally the safest times to tackle the 2287-meter summit. The mountain experiences high winds and deep snow during the winter, severely limiting typical recreational access.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The mountain is true to its name, featuring an arid, rocky, and karst limestone landscape with very few water sources. The steep and rugged ascent requires careful navigation over loose stones and exposed ridges.
🎒
What to bring
Because there is virtually no surface water available, bringing an exceptionally large supply of drinking water is mandatory. Sturdy footwear and robust sun protection are also absolutely essential for this dry environment.
🅿️
Parking
Visitors normally leave vehicles at designated spots in the lakeside towns before proceeding on foot. Planning for early morning parking and an immediate start is heavily advised to beat the midday heat.
⚠️
Safety
The primary hazards are intense sun exposure and the severe lack of shade or hydration sources. Traveling with a local guide is widely recommended to safely navigate the featureless and confusing karst terrain.
⏱️
Time needed
Ascending the Dry Mountain and returning to the lakeshore is typically a highly demanding full-day trek. Hikers generally need about eight to ten hours to safely complete the round trip from the base.
