Blato Wetland is located in southwestern North Macedonia near Lake Prespa. It covers an area of about 5 square kilometers and is one of the country's most significant marshlands. The area is fed by groundwater and seasonal floods, creating unique flora and fauna. Blato hosts over 200 bird species, including rare ones like the Dalmatian pelican and the Bewick's swan. Vegetation consists of reed beds, sedge meadows, and riparian forests. The wetland plays a crucial hydrological role, acting as a natural flood buffer and regulating the microclimate. It is also an important spawning ground for fish such as pike and carp. Local communities use reeds for traditional crafts like roofing and basket weaving.

Best season
The best observation season is spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) during bird migration. In summer (June-August) many breeding birds are active but vegetation is denser.
Best time of day
Early morning from 5 to 8am is the most intense time to observe bird migration. Late afternoon from 4pm birds return to roosting sites, offering a fine spectacle.
Etiquette
Stay on marked paths in the wetland to avoid trampling sensitive vegetation. Avoid noise and sudden movements that could startle bird colonies.
What to bring
Binoculars are indispensable for identifying often distant birds. Rubber boots are recommended as wetland paths are often wet and muddy.

Blato Wetland is located near Resen in North Macedonia, reachable by car on local roads. A short walk from the parking area leads to viewing points.
What to expect
