💡 Tips
- The scenic mountain road connecting Ohrid and Prespa lakes is winding and steep; drive carefully, especially in the afternoon sun.
- To get the iconic photo of both lakes, hike up to Magaro peak; it's a moderately difficult 3-4 hour round trip from the mountain pass.
- The high-altitude road is closed during winter due to heavy snow; always check local conditions before driving from November to April.
- Bring a windproof jacket even in summer, as the mountain pass is notoriously windy.
🍽 Food
Enjoy this famous fish at restaurants in coastal villages on the park's edge, like Trpejca.
A traditional layered pastry baked under a sač, often ordered in advance at village guesthouses.

Galichica National Park covers the limestone mountain range between Lake Ohrid and Lake Prespa in southwestern North Macedonia. Its unique geography makes it one of the most scenic parks in the Balkans. The highest peak, Magaro at 2,254 meters, is a legendary spot for hikers; on clear days, it provides a simultaneous view of both lakes, a sight that is truly one-of-a-kind. The park is a biodiversity hotspot, home to over 1,600 plant species, many of which are endemic to these mountains. Geologically, Galichica is fascinating because it acts as a giant filter: Lake Prespa's water travels through underground karst channels beneath the mountain to emerge as crystal-clear springs in Lake Ohrid. The high-altitude road connecting the two lakes is a favorite for scenic drives and cyclists. Adventure seekers visit Galichica for paragliding, as the thermal winds above the lakes are among the best in the region. There are numerous well-marked hiking trails ranging from easy walks to challenging alpine ascents. The best time to explore the park is from late spring to autumn. Access is easy from the lakeside road south of Ohrid or from the Prespa side near Stenje village.
