Maliq is a town in eastern Albania, situated in the fertile Korçë Plain along the banks of the Devoll River. The town gained significant prominence during the socialist era when Albania's first sugar refinery was established here in 1951, transforming Maliq into the hub of the national sugar industry. Historically, the surrounding area was dominated by Lake Maliq and extensive wetlands, which were drained starting in 1946 to create arable land for agriculture. Archaeological excavations near the village of Dunavec have revealed settlements dating back to the Chalcolithic period, showcasing thousands of years of human activity in the region. Today, Maliq serves as a local administrative and commercial center, deeply connected to the agricultural output of the surrounding basin. At an elevation of approximately 820 meters above sea level, the town experiences a continental climate with cold winters and warm summers, framed by the rugged mountains of southeastern Albania.
