Saint Naum Monastery (North Macedonia)

Weather…

The Monastery of Saint Naum is situated on the southern shores of Lake Ohrid, near the Albanian border, and is one of North Macedonia's most revered spiritual sites. Founded in 905 by Saint Naum of Ohrid, a disciple of Saints Cyril and Methodius, it played a crucial role in the spread of Christianity and Slavic literacy. The original church was destroyed during the Ottoman era, and the current structure primarily dates from the 16th and 17th centuries, featuring traditional Byzantine architecture. Saint Naum is buried in a separate chapel within the church, and local legend claims that his heartbeat can still be heard by placing one's ear on the sarcophagus. The interior is adorned with magnificent frescoes and an ornate iconostasis from 1711, showcasing the height of regional woodcarving. The monastery complex is set against the springs of the Black Drin River, which feed into the lake, creating a serene and easy on the eye landscape. Today, it remains an active monastic community and a cornerstone of the UNESCO World Heritage region of Ohrid.
