Lake Ohrid (Albania)

Weather…

Lake Ohrid is one of the oldest and deepest lakes in Europe, located on the mountainous border between Albania and North Macedonia. Estimations place its age between two and five million years, making it a rare ancient lake with global ecological significance. With a maximum depth of 289 meters, its crystalline waters are home to over 200 endemic species, including the famous Ohrid trout (Salmo letnica). The lake was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1979, with the Albanian portion added in 2019, recognizing its exceptional natural and cultural value. On the Albanian shore, the city of Pogradec provides a gateway to the lake's serene beauty, while the nearby Lin Peninsula features remarkable 6th-century Early Christian mosaics. The lake is primarily fed by underground karst springs originating from the higher-altitude Lake Prespa. Lake Ohrid's long-term isolation has allowed for the evolution of unique biological forms, earning it the reputation of a 'living museum' of evolutionary history.
