Ostrovo Island is a small island in Lake Prespa, southwestern North Macedonia. It covers about 0.3 square kilometers and is the country's only inhabited island. The island is known for its 14th-century Byzantine church dedicated to Saint George. Vegetation includes Mediterranean shrubs and pines. The island hosts a colony of cormorants and other waterbirds. Getting there
The island in Lake Ohrid is accessible exclusively by water. The journey typically takes place via small local boats or organized water taxis that depart from the nearby coastal villages or busier tourist centers on the mainland.
Best season
The summer months reliably offer calm waters and highly pleasant weather for a gentle boat ride. In late spring, the natural flora blossoms, while winter trips are quite rare due to rougher weather and limited boat services.
Terrain & paths
The island is small and preserved in a natural state, featuring sandy shores and dense vegetation in its interior. There are hardly any paved paths, so walking involves navigating uneven ground and sandy stretches at the edges.
What to bring
Comfortable footwear that can withstand getting wet is highly recommended for safely getting in and out of the boats. Bring effective insect repellent, strong sun cream, and a camera to document the pristine nature and birdlife.
Parking
You can easily park your vehicle at the mainland ports or near the designated landing stages. During the summer months, it is highly advisable to seek out a parking space early, as spots in coastal towns are quickly taken by bathers.

Deeply respect the island's ecological sensitivity and strictly avoid making excessive noise so as not to disturb the nesting birds. Wear a life jacket during the boat trip and never leave any rubbish behind in this fragile ecosystem.
