Steenwijk is a historic fortress town in the province of Overijssel and serves as the administrative heart of the Steenwijkerland municipality. The town gained significant prominence during the Eighty Years' War when it was besieged several times due to its strategic position on the route to Friesland, most notably in 1580 and 1581. The historic core is still encircled by well-preserved ramparts and moats, designed according to the principles of Old Dutch fortification art. The most striking building is St. Clement's Church, featuring an 87-meter-high tower that acts as a landmark visible for miles around. Steenwijk is tucked away in a diverse landscape near the Weerribben-Wieden National Park, one of Western Europe's largest low-moor areas. Industrial growth in the 19th century was spurred by its connection to the railway network and the establishment of tobacco and textile factories. Today, the town is a vital regional service center, attracting visitors with its blend of historical charm and proximity to major tourist destinations like Giethoorn.
