Schiermonnikoog is the easternmost and most tranquil of the inhabited Dutch Wadden Islands. The entire island has been designated a National Park, underscoring its exceptional ecological significance. One of its greatest attractions is the 'Rif,' a sandy beach considered one of the widest in Europe, giving visitors a sense of endless horizon. As the island is car-free for tourists, a peaceful silence prevails, broken only by the sound of the sea and birdsong. The island's only village, also named Schiermonnikoog, is defined by heritage-listed houses and cozy squares. A notable landmark in the village is the jawbone of a blue whale, brought here in 1950 by a whaler as a gift to the islanders. The island has a massive variety of habitats within a small area: from dunes and salt marshes to small forests and freshwater lakes. Birdwatchers are especially well-served here, as the island is a vital stopover for migratory birds. The island's two lighthouses, the active red tower and the decommissioned white one, are characteristic landmarks. The ferry departs from Lauwersoog and the journey takes about 45 minutes. Since cars are not allowed, buses and numerous bike rental shops are ready at the pier. The best time to visit is summer for beach lovers or autumn for those wanting to witness the raw beauty of the North Sea and the bird migrations.
