Thialf in Heerenveen is the most prestigious speed skating arena in the Netherlands and one of the most famous worldwide. Originally opened in 1967 as an outdoor track, the facility was converted into an indoor arena in 1986, making it the world's second indoor 400-meter speed skating oval. The stadium is renowned for its fast ice surface and the electric atmosphere generated during international competitions such as World Championships and World Cups. Between 2015 and 2016, Thialf underwent a massive renovation to meet modern technological standards for climate control and sustainability. The complex features a 400-meter competition oval, a 333-meter training track, and an ice rink for ice hockey and figure skating. Known as the 'Mecca' of speed skating, Thialf has been the site of numerous world records and serves as the primary training ground for the Dutch national team.
