De Boschplaat (Netherlands)

Weather…

De Boschplaat is a vast nature reserve on the eastern side of the Wadden island of Terschelling and is considered one of the most valuable wilderness areas in the Netherlands. Stretching about ten kilometers in length, it encompasses a dynamic landscape of primary dunes, salt marshes, and extensive sand flats that transition directly into the Wadden Sea. Since 1970, the area has held the European Diploma for Protected Areas, highlighting its international significance for nature conservation. The Boschplaat is particularly important as a breeding and resting ground for tens of thousands of birds, including rare species such as the Spoonbill and the Little Tern. The vegetation is strongly influenced by the tides, with rare sea samphire and sea lavender turning vast areas into a sea of violet blossoms during the summer months. During the breeding season from mid-March to mid-August, access to the core area is restricted to visitors to avoid disturbing the animals. The region is also certified as a 'Dark Sky Park,' being one of the few places in the Netherlands where absolute darkness and a clear starry sky without light pollution can be experienced.
