Dwingelderveld (Netherlands)

Weather…

Dwingelderveld National Park, located in the province of Drenthe, encompasses the largest contiguous wet heathland in Western Europe and is a vital ecological sanctuary. The 37-square-kilometre area features a gently undulating landscape where damp depressions and dry sandy ridges create diverse habitats for rare flora such as the marsh gentian and various sundew species. To prevent the heath from being overtaken by scrub and forest, two large flocks of Drenthe Heath sheep are used for grazing, maintaining a centuries-old agricultural tradition. On the park's edge stands the historic Dwingeloo Radio Observatory, which was the largest radio telescope in the world upon its completion in 1956 and is now a national monument. Established as a national park in 1991, the area serves as a significant breeding ground for numerous wading birds and is one of the few places where all three snake species native to the Netherlands can be found.
