The Northern Dune Peak marks one of the highest natural elevations in the north of the Netherlands, primarily located in the Schoorl Dunes. This relief system is unique as it encompasses the widest and highest dunes in the country, some of which rise over 50 meters in height. The geological dynamics are shaped by constant sand drifting and the influence of the North Sea, leading to a continuous change in the peak's form. Historically, the area was used for defense and as a navigational point for seafaring. Today, the peak is a central point for nature conservation, as it provides a habitat for specialized pioneer plants and rare bird species. The lime-poor soils in the north differ significantly from the lime-rich dunes south of Haarlem, resulting in a unique heath and dune landscape. The steep climbs to the peak are popular among athletes for stair training and hiking.
