Heerenveen is a major municipality in the province of Friesland (Fryslân) and is recognized as the oldest town in the Netherlands established through systematic peat extraction. The town was founded in 1551 by three „Lords” (Heeren) who formed the Schoterlandse Veencompagnie to economically develop the region's vast moorlands. Today, Heerenveen is internationally celebrated as the „Sport City of the North”. Its Thialf stadium is one of the world's premier speed skating venues, hosting numerous world championships. The city is also a stronghold in football, represented by SC Heerenveen and the iconic Abe Lenstra Stadium. Culturally, the Museum Belvédère for modern and contemporary art, located in the Oranjewoud museum park, is of significant importance. The adjacent Oranjewoud park, formerly a country estate for the Dutch Royals, features magnificent Baroque gardens and avenues. Furthermore, Heerenveen serves as a vital economic hub for industrial leaders such as Accell Group (bicycle manufacturing) and Philips.
