Giethoorn is world-famous for its idyllic location in the Weerribben-Wieden National Park. Since there are no roads in the historic part of the village, transportation traditionally takes place via 'punters' (boats) on the numerous canals. The more than 170 wooden bridges connecting the small islands, where 18th and 19th-century thatched farmhouses stand, give the place a fairy-tale charm. Visitors can rent an electric boat themselves or join a guided boat tour to enjoy the tranquility of the waterways. In addition to the canals, the village has interesting museums such as 'Het Olde Maat Uus', which depicts the lives of peat cutters from the past. The surrounding lake landscape also invites sailing and hiking in untouched nature. In recent years, Giethoorn has achieved international fame, making a visit in the early morning or during the off-season highly recommended. Gastronomy right on the water provides local specialties and a wonderful view. Giethoorn is a unique example of living in harmony with water and nature.
