Workum (Netherlands)

Weather…

Workum is one of the historic 'Eleven Cities' of Friesland, located in the southwest of the province. The town's elongated shape stems from its development along a canal. Workum is primarily known as an artistic hub, largely due to the Jopie Huisman Museum. This museum is dedicated to the works of the local painter, famous for his realistic depictions of everyday objects and Frisian life. Architecturally, Workum has a striking central market square called 'de Merk'. Here stands the impressive St. Gertrude's Church with its detached bell tower from the 15th century. Right next to it is the old Weigh House (Waag), which now serves as a museum documenting the town's commercial history. Workum was once a major center for maritime trade and shipbuilding, visible today in the magnificent facades of the gabled houses. Another highlight is the Frisian pottery tradition. There are still workshops in town producing typical Workum earthenware with its characteristic glazes. For nature lovers, the nearby shores of the IJsselmeer offer sandy beaches that are excellent for kitesurfing and hiking. The town is also a key stop on the famous Elfstädtetour, the legendary Dutch long-distance ice skating event.
