Weather…

The Dwingelo area in the province of Drenthe is best known for the Dwingelderveld National Park, the largest contiguous wet heathland in Western Europe. This vast natural landscape covers nearly 3,700 hectares and is characterized by a unique combination of wet depressions, bogs, and dry sand ridges. Since its establishment in 1991, the park has served to protect rare plant species such as the Marsh Gentian and various orchids. A prominent landmark at the edge of the heath is the Dwingeloo Radio Telescope, commissioned in 1956, which was the largest in the world at the time. The historical use of the heath for sheep grazing is maintained to this day by two active sheep flocks to prevent the encroachment of scrubland. Visitors can explore the area on an extensive network of cycling and hiking paths that lead through quiet forests and over endless purple heathlands. Geologically, the region is shaped by glacial deposits responsible for the formation of characteristic pingo ruins and bogs.
