Weerribben-Wieden National Park (Netherlands)

Weather…

Weerribben-Wieden National Park is the largest continuous peat bog area in Northwestern Europe, located in the province of Overijssel. The landscape is a result of centuries of peat extraction, which created a mosaic of canals, ponds (wieden), and narrow strips of land (ribben) where the peat was laid out to dry. This semi-natural environment is home to a wide range of rare species, including the European otter, which was successfully reintroduced to the area in 2002. The park's wetlands support extensive reed beds, which are still harvested by local farmers for use in traditional thatched roofs. Boating is the primary way to explore the area, with the nearby village of Giethoorn serving as a major gateway to the labyrinth of waterways. The transition from open water to marsh forest provides a variety of habitats for dragonflies, butterflies, and marsh birds such as the black tern.
