Makkum has a rich history as a trading and industrial center. Even during the Golden Age, the town was known for its lime kilns, brickworks, and shipbuilding. Today, however, Makkum is primarily synonymous with the finest Frisian ceramics. Royal Tichelaar Makkum, founded in 1572, is the oldest existing company in the Netherlands and continues to produce hand-painted earthenware that is highly sought after by collectors and museums worldwide. A significant part of Makkum's appeal is its location on the IJsselmeer. The town features one of the few real sandy beaches in the region, which is particularly popular with families and water sports enthusiasts due to its shallow waters. Makkum is considered one of the best windsurfing and kitesurfing spots in Northern Europe. The beach boulevard provides modern dining and great views, while the historic town center with its old warehouses and captain houses reveals a quieter side of the village. The central landmark is the old Weigh House (Waag) dating from 1698. Nearby nature reserves like the Makkumerwaard are great for long walks and birdwatching. The harbor is a major hub for recreational boating and also houses a shipyard for luxury superyachts, underscoring the town's modern maritime importance. Makkum is the well-suited destination for travelers looking to combine cultural history with a modern beach holiday.
