Weerribben-Wieden (Netherlands)

Weather…

The Weerribben-Wieden National Park in the province of Overijssel is the largest contiguous fen mire in Northwestern Europe and stands as a prime example of a man-made natural landscape. The area's unique geography is the result of centuries of peat extraction, which left behind a labyrinthine network of waterways (wieden) and narrow drying ridges (ribben). Since the cessation of commercial peat cutting in the early 20th century, the region has evolved into a diverse ecosystem hosting rare species such as the large copper butterfly and various marsh orchids. A significant conservation success was the reintroduction of the otter in 2002, which has since established a stable population throughout the wetlands. The park also encompasses culturally significant villages like Giethoorn, world-renowned for its canal-based transport system. In 2009, the Weerribben and Wieden areas were officially merged into a single national park covering over 100 square kilometres of protected water and reed beds.
