Weather…

De Wieden is an impressive nature reserve in the province of Overijssel and, together with the adjacent Weerribben, forms the largest contiguous low-peat national park in Northwestern Europe. The area is a man-made product of centuries of peat extraction, where severe storms in the 18th and 19th centuries flooded vast areas of the peat workings, creating today's lakes such as the Beulakerwijde. This water landscape is characterized by extensive reed beds, floating fens, and marsh forests, which provide shelter for a variety of rare species. Particularly noteworthy is the presence of the Eurasian otter, which finds well-suited living conditions here, as well as the area's importance as a breeding ground for the Great Bittern. Traditional reed harvesting is still practiced today, contributing to the preservation of the open landscape. Visitors can best explore the region from the water, where silent electric boats allow for undisturbed wildlife observation.
