Ameland is often called the 'Diamond of the Wadden Islands,' renowned for its natural beauty and relaxed pace of life. The island features four villages, Hollum, Ballum, Nes, and Buren, all of which have preserved their historic character with old captains' houses from the peak of the whaling era. The iconic red-and-white striped 'Bornrif' lighthouse near Hollum is a favorite photo spot and gives a grand panoramic view after climbing 236 steps. A unique Ameland tradition is the demonstration of the horse-drawn rescue boat, where ten powerful horses pull the lifeboat through the surf into the sea. The island's nature is incredibly diverse: the 'Het Oerd' nature reserve in the east consists of high dunes and salt marshes, providing vast views over the Wadden Sea. Ameland's beaches are frequently awarded for their cleanliness. A visit is not complete without tasting 'Nobeltje,' a locally produced liqueur based on a well-kept family secret recipe. The island also has numerous activities such as mudflat walking, horseback riding on the beach, and extensive cycling tours through the scenic dunes. The ferry departs from Holwerd and reaches the island in about 45 minutes (express service 20 min). Ameland is very family-friendly, offering a great mix of natural exploration and cultural events. The best time to visit is from May to September, when the island's flora is in full bloom.
