In early August Sneek hosts Sneekweek, Europe's largest inland sailing event, with regattas, music and a funfair.
Sneek (West Frisian: Snits) is a bustling city in the province of Friesland and one of the historic eleven Frisian cities. It serves as the cultural and economic heart of the Súdwest-Fryslân municipality and is globally recognized as a premier water sports destination. The city's primary icon is the Waterpoort, an ornate water gate built in 1613 that originally formed part of the city's defensive works. Every year, the city hosts Sneekweek, the largest inland sailing event in Europe, drawing thousands of sailors and spectators. Beyond its maritime fame, Sneek has a deep commercial history, notably in textiles; the international fashion retail chain C&A was founded here in 1841 by the Brenninkmeijer brothers. The historic center, featuring scenic canals, traditional gabled houses, and the Martini Church, provides a quintessential Frisian experience. Today, Sneek remains a vital hub for tourism within the Frisian Lakes district, fiercely maintaining its regional identity.
