Lauwersmeer National Park (Netherlands)

Weather…

Lauwersmeer National Park was created in 1969 when the Lauwerszee bay was dammed to protect the surrounding areas from flooding. This transition from a saltwater sea to a freshwater lake led to the rapid development of a diverse ecosystem consisting of reed beds, meadows, and forests. The park is recognized as a Dark Sky Park, one of the few places in the Netherlands where light pollution is minimal and the Milky Way is clearly visible. It is an internationally significant area for birds, serving as a wintering and breeding ground for species such as the spoonbill and the white-tailed eagle. Large herbivores, including Konik horses and Highland cattle, graze the landscape to maintain the open grasslands and prevent shrub encroachment. The park gives numerous hiking and cycling trails, as well as opportunities for water-based recreation on the lake itself.
