Stavoren features a history spanning over a thousand years, making it the oldest of the eleven Frisian cities. In the Middle Ages, Stavoren was a wealthy Hanseatic city with strong trade links to Baltic countries. However, the city's fortune eventually declined, giving rise to the famous legend of the 'Vrouwtje van Stavoren' (Lady of Stavoren). A statue of this haughty merchant woman stands in the harbor today, serving as a cautionary tale about greed and vanity. Today, Stavoren is a lively hub for water sports on the IJsselmeer. The harbor is the heart of the city, where modern yachts are moored alongside historic sailing ships. A unique attraction is the 'wine barrel hotel': oversized former wine barrels converted into cozy hotel rooms, situated right by the harbor. The town also serves as a major ferry hub, providing a link to Enkhuizen on the opposite side of the lake. Stavoren's architecture is a blend of historic brickwork and modern maritime elements. A stroll along the quay walls provides great views of the water and the distinctive red-and-white lighthouse at the harbor entrance. Gastronomically, Stavoren is known for its fresh fish, best enjoyed directly from the stalls at the harbor. The surrounding landscape is flat, offering well-suited conditions for extensive cycling trips along the dikes.
