Ungoofaaru is the official administrative capital of Raa Atoll and lies about 175 kilometers north of Malé. With around 2000 residents, the island has grown over the past two decades into a regional medical center, Ungoofaaru Regional Hospital is one of the largest state hospitals outside Malé, serving not only its own atoll but parts of the northern atolls with surgical, obstetric and laboratory diagnostic care. The island is also home to the atoll administration, a police district, several schools, a Bank of Maldives branch and a growing harbor. The economy relies on fishing, boat building, administrative services and a growing share of jobs in surrounding resorts such as Joali Maldives, Heritance Aarah and Emerald Maldives. Thanks to Ifuru Airport in the same atoll, Ungoofaaru is also well linked by speedboat to the national air network.
