Thulusdhoo is the administrative capital of Kaafu Atoll and lies about 28 kilometers northeast of Malé. The island has around 1700 residents and is nationally known for two distinctive features: first, the MIFCO Coca-Cola bottling plant, regarded as the only Coca-Cola factory in the world producing its drink from desalinated seawater; second, its world class surf spots Cokes (right off the island, named after the factory) and Chickens on the neighboring island. These right breaking waves attract surfers from Australia, Brazil and Hawaii, especially between March and October. The island has several guesthouses, surf schools, cafés with local cuisine, a modern harbor and a school. Economically, life depends on surf tourism, fishing and Coca-Cola production, which employs many islanders. A speedboat link to Malé allows day trips both to the city and to Velana International Airport.
