- Ferries from Male can take many hours; opt for a domestic flight to Kaadedhdhoo followed by a short speedboat trip.

Thinadhoo is the capital of Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll in the south of the Maldives, and an island with a particularly turbulent history. In 1962, following the violent suppression of the Suvadive Republic by the Maldivian government, Thinadhoo was completely evacuated and destroyed, with all residents forced to flee to neighboring islands. Only nine years later, in 1971, the island was officially repopulated, and today around 7000 people live here. This history has forged a strong cultural identity: Thinadhoo is regarded as a self-aware, politically active community with its own festivals commemorating the expulsion. Economically, the island is a regional hub for trade, education and healthcare, anchored by the Dr. Abdul Samad Memorial Hospital. It is linked by ferry to Kaadedhdhoo Airport and hosts several secondary schools as well as a campus of the Maldives National University. The annual Black Friday observance remembers the events of 1962.
