Villingili, often spelled Vilingili, is the capital of Gaafu Alif Atoll in the south of the Maldives, less than 50 kilometers north of the Equator. The island has about 3000 residents and is regarded as a regional educational center, hosting Jamaaluddeen School and several vocational training institutes. Geographically, Villingili lies in the huge Suvadiva Atoll, one of the largest and deepest lagoons in the world, making the island a strategic shipping point. Through the nearby Kooddoo Airport connection, regular flights link the island to Malé. The local economy is built on daily fishing with traditional Dhoni boats, on boat repair and to a lesser extent on coconut processing and mat weaving. Villingili is also known for its quiet sandbanks and the wide lagoons with unusually clear water, handy for snorkeling and stand up paddleboarding. The island also features an atoll administration office, a post office and several mosques.
