Kulhudhuffushi is the largest town in the north of the Maldives and the capital of Haa Dhaalu Atoll. With about 10000 inhabitants, the island acts as the economic and administrative hub for the northern region, far from the bustle of the capital Malé. Kulhudhuffushi is best known for its extensive mangrove swamps, locally called kulhi, which not only form an important ecosystem but are also traditionally used to produce Hibaru, a dark dried fiber made from Cordia root strands. This fiber is woven into ropes and fine mats. The town has had its own domestic airport since 2018, significantly improving connectivity to Malé. It also hosts a regional hospital with a surgical wing, several secondary schools and a vocational training center. Economically, Kulhudhuffushi relies on fishing, boat building and trade with the surrounding inhabited islands of the atoll.
